Alex Lowry will be put out on loan by Rangers once again in this transfer window after Heart of Midlothian moved to end his current deal early.
The talented attacking midfielder has been sparsely used at Tynecastle Park under Steven Naismith and his time in Edinburgh has now been brought to an end prematurely.
“We took the decision to end the loan with Alex’s best interests in mind," the Hearts head coach told the club's website. “There is absolutely no doubting Alex’s talents as a player, and he’s shown in periods what he’s capable of doing on the pitch. But with the competition for places fierce in our squad, he’s probably not going to get the game time that would allow him to develop further, which is one of the reasons he was here in the first place.
“I’ve no doubt he’ll go on to become a top player. He’s a great boy, we thank him for all his efforts at Hearts and wish him well for the future.”

Rangers will move to organise another loan for the 20-year-old so he can further develop his game as he is not in Philippe Clement's thoughts for this season.
Lowry showed flashes of his quality in Edinburgh, making 10 starts in the league. His final appearance in Maroon was as a 62nd-minute substitute against Ross County in the 2-2 home draw on December 30th. He is currently out of action with a minor back injury.
His Rangers contract runs for another 18 months, expiring in the summer of 2025.
Lowry did turn out for Rangers B against The Spartans in the Challenge Cup back in August but it's understood that this would be classed as a youth game and would have no impact on rules not permitting players to play for more than two separate clubs in a single season.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
