Joe Hart 7
The 36-year-old was unlucky to concede in the first half after tipping Antoine Griezmann's penalty onto the post before the Frenchman dispatched the rebound. He could not do anything about the second goal and made a couple of good stops to keep things even.
Alistair Johnston 7
It was a solid showing from the right-back who linked up well with Daizen Maeda and was strong defensively.
Cameron Carter-Vickers 7
He was strong in the tackle and commanded his backline well. The American equipped himself expertly against high-quality opposition.
Liam Scales 7
Another match in which the Irishman rose to the occasion. He seems to be improving every week and had another good performance in which he won the majority of duels.
Greg Taylor 6
The 25-year-old had an up-and-down game as he linked up well with Luis Palma going forward but struggled defensively. He gave away a clumsy penalty in the first half which led to the visitors' first goal and then for their second of the night he stepped back from the attacker which allowed the cross to be played in for Alvaro Morata's equaliser.
Callum McGregor 7
It was an understated performance from the captain. He kept things calm in the middle of the park and linked play well. There were times he was chasing the play as the opposition dominated portions of the second half but overall, he competed well.
Reo Hatate 3
He did not have time to make an impact after picking up what looked like a hamstring injury six minutes in.
Matt O'Riley 8
Another game in which the the Dane was a real standout. His passing was exquisite, and he looked like he really belonged at the highest level. The assist for Kyogo Furuhashi's goal was outstanding and the midfielder was not afraid to do the dirty work.
Daizen Maeda 8
The Japan international put in a real shift as his positive attributes shone through. He caused a lot of problems for Atletico Madrid in the first half and provided the assist for Palma's goal.
Luis Palma 7
It was the forward's clinical strike in the first half that put the hosts back in front. He pressed well and was probably unlucky to be subbed just after 60 minutes.
Kyogo Furuhashi 7
He broke the deadlock early with a neat finish. His movement caused problems in the early stages, but he fell out of the fixture as it progressed.
Substitutes
Paulo Bernardo (for Hatate, 7) 6
The Portuguese playmaker competed well but showed a lack of sharpness at times in terms of his decision making.
Nat Phillips (for Palma, 62) 5
He was solid defensively.
James Forrest (for Kyogo, 79) 3
There was not much time for him to make an impact.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
