Craig Levein has left St Johnstone.

The Perth club has announced that the 59-year-old has parted company with the former Heart of Midlothian, Dundee United and Scotland manager just five matches into the Scottish Premiership season.

A short club statement reads: "The board of directors can announce that St Johnstone Football Club has today parted company with manager Craig Levein.

"The football club would like to place on record its thanks to Craig for all of his efforts during his time at McDiarmid Park."

Saints are tenth in the table after a rocky start to the campaign. They sit on three points after a resounding 3-0 victory away to Kilmarnock on the second weekend of the season.

They were knocked out of the League Cup in the last-16 by Rangers.

Meanwhile, defeats to Aberdeen and Motherwell at McDiarmid Park and losses at Dundee United and Hibernian seem to have convinced the club's new owner Adam Webb to act at this early juncture.

It's believed that Levein conducted a press conference at 1pm this afternoon before the decision was made by the St Johnstone hierarchy.

During this briefing, he spoke about goalkeeping coaches, after Gordon Marshall's appointment, as well as signing targets for the future.
