Philippe Clement conceded that Rangers still have "a lot of work to do" after suffering a bruising 3-0 defeat against Celtic. 

The Glasgow giants went head-to-head at Parkhead on Sunday in the first Old Firm clash of the new Scottish Premiership campaign. 

Rangers, who slip five behind their city rivals in the league table, began the encounter reasonably well but they never penetrated Kasper Schmeichel's goal enough and allowed Celtic to score three without reply through Daizen Maeda, Kyogo Furuhashi and Callum McGregor. 

The 90 minutes was an indicator at the current gap between the pair. However, Clement has challenged his Light Blues squad to be more clinical on a regular basis - especially during ties where the margins can be slim - and believes there were some positives to take back to Govan.

"Scoring goals is about quality," a downbeat Clement explained. 

"One week ago we scored six (versus Ross County). Today not, so it's about working on that and doing it many times, and getting confidence out of that. I think the confidence before the game was there.

"If you look back at the first 10 minutes, the way we played, we were good on the ball, we were brave on the ball, it was not kick and rush and hoping for something. There was some good football there, creating good chances, even in the first minute with the header of Robin (Propper). 

"But you need to finish it off as otherwise you don't have anything to tell after a 3-0."

Asked if he felt Rangers' game plan worked in spells despite the final score reflecting a grim picture, Clement replied: "Yes, I think it shows the potential that there is in this squad. There's still 34 games to go, we know at this moment that we need to improve a lot of things. 

"We need to gel people together and get this automatism between players, and the faster the game goes, the higher the level is, the faster you have to make decisions. We need to create over the next week's and month's this connection between players. It's a normal thing. 

"You saw also the moment that Celtic bring on a lot of players that they paid a lot of money for, it was not the same way of playing although they have to do the same things from their manager.

"But they need to come into this way of playing, defensively and offensively what to do together. It's  a normal thing in football. So, we know that we have a lot of work to do.

"We knew already two weeks ago, we knew four weeks ago, we knew two months ago - and we are going to do that."
