Lewis Ferguson is making significant progress in his recovery from a serious knee injury, as he took his first steps on grass since enduring the setback which sidelined him from participating at Euro 2024.

The former Aberdeen and Hamilton Academical midfielder was seen engaging in light training with his teammate Dan Ndoye on Monday morning.

Currently serving as the captain of Bologna, Ferguson missed the final matches of last season in Serie A due to cruciate ligament damage sustained in April. With Bologna finishing fifth in the Italian league, he is racing against time to be fit for their upcoming Champions League campaign.

Delivering an update on Instagram, the Scotland international said: "Work work work!! Finally back on the pitch too."

Ferguson's social media post included multiple pictures, showcasing him on the field again, participating in a kit photoshoot, performing rehabilitation exercises with the medical staff, and enjoying a view of the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara while observing his team from the stands.

In other news, Ferguson's Scotland teammate, Kieran Tierney, is also battling to reach full fitness again after returning from this summer's European Championship with a hamstring injury.

Tierney, who sustained the setback during a Group A match against Switzerland on June 19, finds himself behind Oleksandr Zinchenko, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Jurrien Timber, Jakub Kiwior and new signing Riccardo Calafiori in the pecking order for the left-back position under Mikel Arteta.

So, despite it being clear that the 27-year-old's future lies away from the Emirates Stadium, Arteta was eager to emphasise that its his duty to ensure the defender makes a full recovery amid continued transfer speculation.

"He needs to focus on recovering in the best possible way, it’s been a tough time for him again with the last injury," the Arsenal manager said when asked about Tierney's recovery.

"We have to try to support him and make sure he gets back fit."
