BBC commentator Steve Wilson cited Scotland as he covered the last 16 match between Romania and the Netherlands at Euro 2024.

Scotland - who exited the tournament at the group stage - were referenced as Wilson passed comment on Dutch defender Denzel Dumfries.

Wilson recalled the "nice memory" of Scotland at the major finals due to Dumfries' namesake town in Dumfries and Galloway.

Covering the match, Wilson said: "Denzel Dumfries a nice memory really of Scotland's participation in this tournament with his name.

"There are still a few Scots around. Well, the brought, those Scottish supporters a whole lot of fun to proceedings."

Pundit Danny Murphy - on co-commentary for the match, replied: "Oh dear. That wasn't very nice."

Steve Clarke's side were sent home after picking up just one point in the group stage.

Scotland's tournament began against hosts Germany in a brutal 5-1 defeat in Munich.

The opening day loss was followed by a 1-1 draw with Switzerland leaving hope of qualification in the campaign.

However, a demoralising 100th-minute strike from Hungary's Kevin Csoboth ended Scotland's tournament in crushing fashion.

Clarke was left furious over the final defeat as he criticised referee Facundo Tello over his decision not to award a penalty for a Willi Orban challenge on Stuart Armstrong.

The Scotland manager said: "The moment in the game is the penalty. It is 100 per cent a penalty.

"Somebody has to explain to me why that is not a penalty because otherwise, I'm thinking there is something wrong."

Asked whether he had held any conversation with the referee over the denied penalty appeal, he added: "What is the point? He is from Argentina. What is the point? Why is it not a European referee?

"I don't understand why he is here and not in his own country refereeing the game.

"I don't understand the VAR can look at that and say it is not a penalty, just my opinion."
