After taking over from the outgoing Brendan Rodgers in 2009, Mackay spent two years as manager of Watford before signing a three-year deal with Cardiff in the summer of 2011.

In 2013, Mackay led the club to promotion to the English Premiership and was named the LMA Championship Manager of the Year.
