Jack Butland 6
Wasn't forced to deal with a barrage of efforts on his goal. Comfortable with the ball at his feet and easily held a couple of half-chances. Denied Rafa a second with smart stop but unable to deny winner.
James Tavernier 6
A far quieter night than usual on the European stage. Managed Rafa and Neres fairly well but was unable to contribute going forward. Isolated on right flank for large spells as Wright drifted infield.
Connor Goldson 6
In cruise control for large periods of the match but had to be alert with counter-attacks causing serious problems as full backs flew forward leaving defence vulnerable.
John Souttar 6
Similar to partner in central defence, the Scotland international was largely untroubled. A few hairy moments as Benfica overloaded Ibrox rearguard but no major mistakes. Solid enough.
Ridvan Yilmaz 5
Desperate to attack and did cause Benfica problems with overlapping runs. However, was caught out of position on multiple occasions as Di Maria snuck in behind but winger didn't punish Yilmaz.
John Lundstram 6
Involved in almost everything for Rangers - good and bad. Strong in the tackle, intent on forcing issue for Rangers but also sloppy at times. Spared blushes by team-mates after first-half error but made up for it with tireless shift.
Tom Lawrence 7
Looked the player who could have made a difference for Rangers. Desperately unlucky not to score as Trubin scrambled shot wide. Won his battles in midfield and drove side forward but couldn't find breakthrough.
Mohamed Diomande 5
Not one of his better displays in Rangers colours. Struggled to match pace of the game or carve open opposition defence. Unable to stop Rafa as he raced clear to score winner. A learning experience.
Scott Wright 6
A surprise starter at Ibrox and delivered a performance representative of his Rangers career. Showed flashes of quality with surging runs and cutting through balls but not impactful enough.
Fabio Silva 6
Right up for the battle from the first whistle. Constant energy up and down the left wing but not enough quality in the final third when it mattered.
Cyriel Dessers 5
Didn't have a huge amount of service but equally was ineffective when he did have sight of goal. One effort saved before the offside flag and sent another chance wide via deflection from a good position.
Rabbi Matondo (for Wright, 73)
Didn't utilise his pace and was wasteful with crossing.
Todd Cantwell (for Lawrence, 73)
Fairly anonymous in cameo appearance after injury.
Kemar Roofe (for Dessers, 77)
Didn't have any real chances of note.
Nico Raskin (for Diomande, 86)
On for last few minutes.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
