Rangers player ratings as Philippe Clement's side defeat Aberdeen to win the Viaplay League Cup...
JACK BUTLAND 6
A first cup final for the Englishman and he didn’t have much to do in all honesty. Distribution and positioning were impressive throughout but no meaningful saves.
JAMES TAVERNIER 7
Quiet display from the Ibrox skipper up until his big moment. He was marked out of the game for large parts by Ester Sokler but produced the goods with a fine finish for the winner.
CONNOR GOLDSON 7
Trademark display from the big defender. Kept the much-talked-about Aberdeen attack quiet throughout the match.
LEON BALOGUN 7
Defended well up against Bojan Miovski and used his pace to beat his opposite number on several occasions. Missed a big chance in the penalty box with 20 minutes to go.
BORNA BARISIC 6
A solid defensive display but didn’t offer much going forward in terms of runs or deliveries into the box.
JOHN LUNDSTRAM 7
Typical battling performance from the Englishman and tidy in possession too. Picked up a yellow card at the end of the first half, so limited his work in the second period.
DUJON STERLING 8
Energetic and kept the ball well in the middle of the park. A big couple of games this week for the 24-year-old, could have a big role to play this season.
TODD CANTWELL 6
Returned to the Rangers starting XI but failed to make a major impact. Was wasteful in possession and did not create much in the final third like he usually does.
ROSS MCCAUSLAND 6
The young winger didn’t make the impact that he would have been hoping for. Worked and fought hard, but never impacted proceedings with his pace and footwork.
ABDALLAH SIMA 7
A key figure for Rangers this term but one of his quieter matches too. Never had many opportunities to use his pace to affection to hurt Aberdeen. Brilliant tracking late on.
CYRIEL DESSERS 7
Led the line reasonably well for Rangers. Had a big chance to open the scoring on 60 minutes but failed to find the key finish. Would have been hoping to build on his goal scored in midweek vs Betis.
SUBS
SCOTT WRIGHT (FOR MCCAUSLAND, 74) 5
Gave Rangers a boost in the final third when introduced and they scored not long after.
SAM LAMMERS (FOR CANTWELL, 82) 4
Didn’t look after the ball as well as Philippe Clement would have been hoping for in the dying stages.
KEMAR ROOFE (FOR DESSERS, 82) 4
On late to keep the Aberdeen defence on their toes.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
