LENNON MILLER has combined playing for Scotland at the Under 17s Euro Finals in Israel with taking his exams and he admits he's also studying hard to make a first team impact at Motherwell next season.
Scotland kids face their third game of the tournament at Lod tonight against Sweden. To qualify, they would need an unlikely combination of results that would see them have to win, Portugal to beat Denmark and overturn a seven-goal, goal difference.
Miller, son of former Aberdeen and Scotland international and ex-Falkirk co-manager Lee, has had to take his history and biology exams in the Scotland camp in Tel Aviv.
But he's loved the experience despite defeats against the Portuguese and the Danes and is hoping to kick on under boss Graham Alexander next term and follow in the footsteps of former Well midfielders David Turnbull and Allan Campbell.
He said: "The exams were tough. I actually took my history exam on the morning of our second game and did biology before it.
"It's a really strange experience doing your exams out here.
"I had to get up very early to do the exam, but you've got to do it.
"There's a class at 5.30 every night and there's a wee room where we went to study and you do your work and then go back to training.
"It's been good for me at Motherwell. I'm playing every week for the Under 18s. We're sitting high up in the league and playing some nice football.
"I've spoken to the manager and trained with the first team a few times. He's looking to bring youth through so that's a good thing for me.
"You look at David Turnbull, who went to the same school as me and Allan Campbell. They are big role models for me.
"I just want to push on and try and make my first team debut next season."
And Miller admits he's learned plenty playing in far different conditions to what he's been used to.
He added: "It was very strange for me playing in that heat against Denmark and very different.
"I'm used to playing in the freezing cold and the rain! It was difficult, but we gave it everything.
"I have learned a lot from playing against Portugal and Denmark. I've taken great experience from playing in those conditions and playing against different formations and styles.
"It's been a good experience from playing against better players and hopefully, we can get a win in our last match of the group."
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
