CELTIC manager Ange Postecoglou says that people ‘shouldn’t fret’ over his contract situation as the Greek-Australian has no designs on leaving Glasgow anytime soon.
The former Yokohama F. Marinos boss took the reins of the Parkhead club last summer and guided the team to a domestic double in his debut campaign in Scotland as his side lifted the cinch Premiership and Premier Sports Cup.
Postecoglou was appointed on a rolling one-year contract and there have been reports that negotiations over a new deal are in the offing.
There has been the usual speculation surrounding the terms that will be offered to the 56-year-old but the man himself remains focused on the task at hand: improving Celtic.
“People shouldn’t fret about that stuff,” Postecoglou said. “That’s not what drives me. It’s not what I am kind of seeking.
“I have always been driven by trying to create things that are special and being part of something that lasts.
“I am at a big football club, with 60,000 people here each week.
“It’s one of the most famous clubs in the world, we will be playing Champions League next year and I can win trophies. I couldn’t be happier.”
A return to Europe’s top table provides Celtic supporters with plenty to look forward to in the new season. Punters are already dreaming of crossing swords with some of the continent’s greatest teams and Postecoglou is no different.
He said: “Have I had a look at the list of clubs in the Champions League? Yeah.
“Who do you fancy … you fancy all of them because you know it’s going to be a tough gig whoever you get.
“But it’s where you want to be - it’s where the clubs wants to be and where I want to be.
“I want us to go into that competition and make an impact. Champions League nights are special at Celtic Park and I can’t wait for them.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
