BARRY FERGUSON has sent a message of support to 'hero' Andy Goram after the news the Rangers legend is battling cancer.

Ibrox chiefs confirmed Goram is receiving treatment for cancer in a local hospital as they released a social media statement tonight.

Following the devastating news, former players, Goram's former clubs and supporters have united to send support in his health battle.

Fellow Ibrox icon Ferguson said on the Go Radio Football Show: "Growing up a Rangers supporter he was certainly one of my heroes. Fantastic goalkeeper.

"Sad news, but listen, he is a fighter and I am sure everybody will echo what I have said and Rangers will do everything they can to try and help him out."

The Scotland national team also offered their support on social media platforms, posting: "Andy and his family are in the thoughts of everyone involved with the Scotland National Team at this time. Stay strong, Andy".

Former club Oldham Athletic commented: "As a club, we are sending our thoughts and well wishes to Andy and his family during this difficult time."

And Queen of the South also sent a message of support to their former goalkeeper, sharing: "Everyone at Queen of the South sends our best wishes to our former goalkeeper Andy Goram at this time."

The Rangers statement had earlier confirmed Goram's cancer treatment and revealed club officials are in contact with both the goalie and his family.

It read: "Rangers can confirm our legendary goalkeeper, Andy Goram, is undergoing treatment for cancer in a local hospital.

"Club officials are in regular contact with Andy and his family.

"The family have asked for privacy at this time.

"💙 Everyone at Rangers wishes “The Goalie” well at this difficult time."

Cambuslang Rangers added: "Everyone at Cambuslang Rangers wish former goalkeeping coach, Andy Goram, the very best as he undergoes treatment. The club will make no further comment and we request that he & his family are given privacy at this time."

Goram earned legendary status at Ibrox for his role in the nine-in-a-row period where he won five league titles, three Scottish Cups and two league cup trophies.

Goram - nicknamed The Goalie - also played for Scotland on 43 occasions and was part of World Cup squads.
