THE Lowland League, the sixth tier of Scottish football, is inviting teams from Scotland's professional set-up to apply to join the division as a 'guest club' following the inclusion of Colts teams from each side of the Old Firm this season.

Celtic and Rangers both included B teams in this year's competition and will retain their places for next season, following an announcement from league chiefs earlier this month.

At the time, Lowland League bosses said there was only room for two 'guest clubs' - teams that cannot be promoted or relegated and are removed from the final league table - but the league is now actively looking for more.

The statement released on Monday night read: "We are delighted to announce that clubs who wish to be considered to be a guest club for season 2022/23 can now submit an expression of interest form.

"Following a recent vote of member clubs the League has vacancies for guest clubs for next season.

"Any club from the SPFL who is interested in being part of the League should email secretary@slfl.co.uk to receive the criteria, league rules and an expression of interest form.

"A further announcement about the inclusion of guest clubs for next season will be made in due course."

Hearts have previously outlined their intention to explore the possibilty of including a B team in the Lowland League and it is thought that other Premiership clubs are interested in following the Old Firm's lead.

The reaction to the announcement has been universal: supporters are not happy with the decision. Coming less than a month after clubs voted against increased promotion and relegation in the sixth tier, many fans feel their wishes have once again been ignored.
