CELTIC manager Ange Postecoglou has insisted that club physiotherapist Danny Friel deserves an apology from Rangers after he was struck in the head with a glass bottle during last Sunday’s derby with Rangers.

The match, that the Parkhead side won 2-1, had to be stopped to clear shards of glass from Joe Hart’s goal and Postecoglou revealed after the full-time whistle that Friel had been struck by a bottle and required stitches in the game’s aftermath.

Celtic supporter liaison officer John-Paul Taylor said on Thursday that the club had received an apology from Rangers over the incident but Postecoglou believes that the Ibrox club should say sorry to Friel individually.

“He is okay,” the Celtic manager said of the physio. “No person should be put in that position whether you are involved in the game like Danny was or if you are a supporter.

“To his credit he handled it really well on the day and has done since. We were concerned for him, I said he should never have been put in that position.

“He works hard for this club, is a great guy and very good at his job. He should mot have to worry about going to his work and coming away with a potential serious injury.

“I’ve not [had an apology from Rangers]. But they don’t owe me an apology - they owe Danny the apology because he is the victim in this.

“It’s not about one-upmanship, it’s about providing a safe environment for the fans, players, staff.

“There’s authorities that are charged in these areas. Like I have my responsibilities, other people are responsible for making sure these events are safe.”
