RANGERS registered their 150th anniversary commemorative white kit with the SPFL at the start of the season.
The Ibrox club announced last week they would be playing in the special "Gallant Pioneers" strip in their cinch Premiership match against Aberdeen in Govan on Saturday.
The Glasgow giants were founded in March 1872 and supporters had organised a giant tifo display inside the stadium for the league game against their Pittodrie rivals.
A statement on the offcial Rangers website read: "In March 2022, it will be exactly 150 years since four young boys – Moses McNeil, Peter McNeil, William McBeath and Peter Campbell – followed their dream to start a football team and begin an adventure within the new, emerging world of association football.
"The lads didn’t have kits, a pitch or famously, even a ball. What they did have though was ambition, passion and commitment and from these roots Rangers Football Club was born.
"These ideals still drive the club today and as part of the celebrations of our 150 years, we are delighted to unveil additional details around how we will celebrate and honour the legacy of the Gallant Pioneers throughout the month of March."
"The 150-themed celebrations will continue on March 5 with our Gallant Pioneers-themed home Scottish Premiership match with Aberdeen.
"Supporters attending this match will be able to enjoy special pre-match activities and entertainment and a collectors’ edition commemorative programme will also be available to purchase.
"The first-team will also wear our very special Gallant Pioneers’ kit for this match.
"The Gallant Pioneers kit has been incredibly popular with supporters already this season and in anticipation of our birthday weekend, Castore will release a PRO edition of this kit which will be presented in a luxury, limited-edition gift box."
Fans were surprised when James Tavernier and his team mates took to the field wearing their traditional light blue jerseys.
Rangers responded by saying they “felt it was fitting to wear our traditional blue home strip” and added that the special kit would be worn “at a future game”.
But a report stated Rangers had not asked the SFA and SPFL for permission to play in the “Gallant Pioneers” strip.
A Hampden source today confirmed that Rangers registered the new strip with the SPFL at the start of the season.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
