THE SPFL should learn on Thursday if they can call time on this season's Ladbrokes Premiership - and declare Celtic champions for the ninth year in a row.

UEFA today recommended that top flight domestic league and cup competitions across Europe should be played to a finish this season – but admitted that “special cases” will be considered.

European football’s governing body held talks with their 55 member associations – including the SFA – via video conference this morning and presented the findings of the two working groups which were set up after the coronavirus outbreak last month.

That included potential dates for club and national team competitions when the football shutdown is lifted.

UEFA have previously warned that countries who end their domestic leagues early risk having their leading clubs barred from entering the Champions League and Europa League next season.

The organisation reiterated that it would like to see leagues and cups completed this summer – but would consider special cases once guidelines on participation in European competitions have been drawn up.

Rangers are still involved in the Europa League and were set to play the second leg of their last 16 double header against Bayer Leverkusen when football was stopped back on March 13.

A further update is expected after the UEFA executive committee meet on Thursday.

The 42 SPFL clubs last week passed a resolution to end the Ladbrokes Championship, League 1 and League 2 and give the board the power to do the same in the Premiership at a later date.

If UEFA give them the go-ahead then the SPFL could curtail the Premiership - meaning that Celtic will be crowned Scottish champions and Hearts will be relegated.

The statement read: “UEFA today met its 55 member associations via video conference and presented an update of the options being looked into by the two working groups that were created mid-March.

"A variety of calendar options were presented covering both national team and club competition matches.

"The funding of National Associations through Uefa's HatTrick programme was also discussed with Uefa reiterating its commitment to meeting the payments to member associations as planned.

"There was a strong recommendation given to finish domestic top division and cup competitions, but some special cases will be heard once guidelines concerning participation to European competitions - in case of a cancelled league - have been developed.

"Any decisions on the above topics would be announced after the Uefa Executive Committee on Thursday."
