STEPHEN Robinson, the Motherwell manager, took the blame for his side’s mistakes in their defeat to Rangers.
A string of individual errors led to all three of Scott Arfield’s goals, a result in part of the Fir Park side’s attempt to play out from the back.
Robinson admitted: “I’m obviously disappointed with the result. We cost ourselves the game. I don’t there was any great Rangers play which won the game, it came from three individual errors.
“We don’t deal with the ball in our own box when we should clear it and that leads to the first goal. We are playing differently, we are playing out from the back, it’s risk versus reward, and our decision-making was poor for the next two goals.
“But we are not going to rip everything up and say that’s not the way we are going to play. It’s about educating people and when not to play and not to play.
“It is frustrating but if you go long you get hammered, if you play short you get hammered. What do people want? We are a young squad. I looked around and I had Jamie Semple to bring on, a 17-year-old, we had an 18-year-old up front, and they are going to make mistakes.
“I’ll take the blame for that. I’m man enough to do that. We will continue trying to progress with what we are doing.”
Motherwell defender Tom Aldred insisted that his team would stick to their plan despite it backfiring on this occasion.
He said: There are going to be teething problems with any new system. To be fair to us, there's actually not been many for us so far. Today there was though but that doesn't mean we now stop. We've doing well and we've got to keep at it – 100 per cent.
“There were a few of us playing last year when we got to the cup finals and teams would have looked at us and thought, 'Flipping...they're physical'.
“We were good at what we did but obviously changed. We've put different players in the team and it's certainly much more enjoyable to play in."
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
