Scott Bain
As you might have expected, the goalie had little actual goalkeeping to do bar one or two moments, which I may have imagined, when San Marino were allowed a shot at goal. 5 (for turning up on time)
Stephen O’Donnell
Had next to no defending duties so he spent most of the game up the park and, as with so many others, wondering how to find a way past ten opponents. A cross almost led to a goal. He was fine. 6
David Bates
He could have been known as the Scotland defender who let a San Marino player – you know, the world’s worst team - get past him to score. Bates got off with that one in the first-half. 5
Scott McKenna
The Aberdeen man didn’t break sweat because he didn’t need to. Won a few headers, put in challenges and that was it. 5
Andy Robertson
Watching the game was reminiscent of going to the dentist so he would have felt totally at home. The captain, to his credit, gives everything in games such as this as if they were a big Champions League match. 6
Stuart Armstrong
Denied a goal twice within a second by some brilliant goalkeeping in the first-half. Did a lot of running, then even more huffing and puffing. Rarely made a run into the box which is what he’s is excellent at. 5
Callum McGregor
A strangely quiet game for normally such an influential player. Bits and bobs was all he contributed. He didn’t seem sure exactly where he was playing. Subbed. 5
Kenny McLean
Early half-decent volley was followed by a perfect glancing header for his first Scotland goal. His passing both long and short was really good. This should get his international career up and running. 7
Johnny Russell
Admit it. You thought he’d made a mess of his goal when he didn’t soot first time. When his big moment came, the striker kept his cool when the rest of us shouted at him. Fair play. 6
Callum Paterson
A surprise starter but was going okay until he jarred his leg when landing after forcing a good save with a header. He went off before the break. Ironically, his injury came on grass. 5
Ryan Fraser
Started well but faded. Beat a few men, drew a couple of free-kicks and it was his cross which picked our McLean for his goal. His delivery from corners and open play wasn't good enough. To be fair, he always wanted to be involved. 6
Substitutes
Mark McNulty
Clever dummy lead to the second. But the Hibs man missed a great chance to score with a header. 5
Scott McTominay
Replaced McGregor and his contribution was a wild effort on goal. 5
James Forrest
He’s fast, has been good for Scotland and is bang in form. So, naturally he didn’t start. Good grief. Set-up the second with his first touch. 6
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
