How Celtic rated . . .
Scott Bain Two fine saves in the latter stages of the opening period; the first was a cracking fingertip save to knock Daniel Parejo’s netbound effort over the bar. Followed that one up with another acrobatic stop from Santi Mina. Little chance with the goal as Celtic tired. 8
Jonny Hayes Worked hard in the wing-back role. Did his best to cover his defensive duties while also getting forward whenever he could. Role reverted to more traditional left-back following the sending off but will feel that he acquitted himself pretty well 7
Kristoffer Ajer Difficult night defensively for the youngster who had two snapshots in the early stages when he sliced over the bar. Glorious chance to give Celtic an unlikely lifeline in the second period when he headed high and wide from close range following Ryan Christie’s free-kick 7
Jozo Simunovic Heavy shift at the back as Valencia turned the screw once Toljan went off. Worked hard but a difficult shift. Caught sleeping when Valencia finally netted. One clearance in the final minute of the game. 6
Dedryck Boyata Too often left his team-mates in trouble with slack passes and a lack of concentration. Ajer's booking came after he was short with a pass towards the young Norwegian which left him in trouble. 6
Jeremy Toljan Sent off after a second yellow which changed the entire tone of the game. The second booking seemed a little soft but by the same token a player with Toljan’s experience shouldn’t have been caught out so easily 4
Ryan Christie Landed a free-kick directly on the head of Ajer in the second-half which the Norwegian kid scorned. Industrious and always looking to make something happen but little real joy. Might have conceded a penalty latterly when he seemed to barge Toni Lato in the box. 6
Callum McGregor Another who was willing to keep working but never able to orchestrate any real influence in a game that was always going to be a difficult task. 6
Scott Brown Booked in opening period for a late challenge on Goncalo Guedes. Couple of slack passes in the opening period and never really found any fluency in the game. 6
James Forrest Sacrificed as the game went on and Brendan Rodgers gambled by throwing on Odsonne Edouard. 6
Oliver Burke Cracking first-half run when he got in behind the Valencia defence after he bolted forward but no support for him inside the box. Frequently used his pace to positive effect but too often without any support around him. 7
SUBSTITUTES
Odsonne Edouard On for the final stages but game was over shortly after when Valencia got their goal. 5
Mikey Johnson Took over from Burke for the final stages. Game was long gone by then but will be a good experience for the youngster. 5
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
