CRAIG GORDON: Vital early save from Kums and had another couple of comfortable stops, but wasn’t over-worked despite Anderlecht’s superiority in the first half. Could do nothing about Simunovic own goal, and had to touch away a stinging shot by Hanni as Anderlecht pushed late on 7
MIKAEL LUSTIG: Looked nervy in the opening stages and had his hands full with the threat of Onyekuru, but settled into the game and managed to quell the threat of the Nigerian as the night wore on. Also tried to get forward when he could 5
DEDRYCK BOYATA: Stood up well to early Anderlecht pressure, but slack pass almost cost Celtic before the break and it wasn’t the only time he was sloppy with his distribution against his countrymen 5

JOZO SIMUNOVIC: Was keeping it simple and dealing with most of what came his way until disaster struck on the hour as he got his head to Appiah’s cross and inadvertently directed the ball past Gordon. Tried to make amends by sending a snap-shot just over 5
KIERAN TIERNEY: Wasn’t getting forward as often as normal in the first half as Celtic struggled with approach to the game, but started to make inroads in the second half before his poor clearance led to Appiah’s cross for opener 5
SCOTT BROWN: Up against it on his record-breaking 69th appearance in European competition trying to police the outstanding Hanni, but stuck to his task and managed to influence the middle of the park more after the break. Solid enough showing 6

STUART ARMSTRONG: Was running up blind alleys and was uncharacteristically wasteful in possession in a sloppy showing. Looked way off the pace, and no surprise to see him replaced at the break 3
JAMES FORREST: Spent the first half helping out Lustig with the threat of Onyekuru, meaning his attacking threat was stunted. Had a good low effort well saved by Boeckx at the start of the second half, but didn’t look too comfortable when switched to right wing-back role 5
CALLUM MCGREGOR: Anonymous in the first half and fared little better in the second. Just didn’t get involved enough in the game at all, and had little bearing on proceedings 4
SCOTT SINCLAIR: Couldn’t get into the game in the opening half hour on the left, and was moved in to play off Dembele. Still nothing came off for him though, and hooked at half-time after an ineffective display to say the least 3

MOUSSA DEMBELE: Ball wasn’t sticking with the Frenchman at all, meaning that Celtic weren’t getting any respite in the opening period. Much improved after the break as he at last provided a threat, before being replaced with 15 minutes to go 5
SUBSTITUTES:
TOM ROGIC: On at the break as Celtic looked to turn the tide of the game, but often caught in two minds about where he should be positioned, and was sometimes ponderous in possession 3
OLIVIER NTCHAM: Also sent on at the interval and provided an impetus to his side that had been lacking straight away. Tidy on the ball and added a composure in the midfield that Celtic were sorely needing 6
ODSONNE EDOUARD: Given last quarter of an hour in place of Dembele after his hat-trick heroics against Motherwell at the weekend, but little time to make an impact 2
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
