DEREK McINNES is the ‘perfect fit’ to be the next Scotland manager - according to Brendan Rodgers.
The Celtic manager has thrown his Aberdeen counterpart’s name forward as the ideal candidate to work with Malky Mackay and take Scotland forward to the next Euros.
McInnes turned down a move to Sunderland in the summer before penning a contract extension until 2020. However, Rodgers, whose Celtic side go up against Aberdeen on Wednesday at Pittodrie, reckons the Scottish FA would be wise to look at the former Scotland internationalist to replace Gordon Strachan.
“I think he’d be a great choice for Scotland,” said the Celtic manager.
“What you have is a guy who has played at the top level in England, he’s played for Scotland, so he’s had that experience. Not that it counts for everything.
“In terms of being able to revamp the technical idea [he’s the right fit], he’s someone who is hungry and he’s a passionate Scotsman. I see that in him. He’s got a great brain for football and he’s someone with energy to carry it through. I have no doubt he’d do a great job.
“I think it would be a perfect fit, I really do.
“With Malky and what he’ll look to do with his technical expertise in terms of trying to shape all elements of the game such as coaching, lifestyle and all that side. What is vitally important is you have then two people in tandem that can work together for the benefit of the game.
“It’s clearly what’s needed, there’s no doubt about that.
“If you can look at it and you think of that two as a dynamic. Hungry, passionate Scottish guys who have good experiences both in the south as players and coaching and management before then bringing it up here, I think you have a very, very good fit there.
“It would work well I’d be pretty sure of it.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
