BAYERN MUNICH
SVEN ULREICH: Virtual spectator until late in the game when saving well from Sinclair and then Rogic, and then palmed away an effort from Forrest to maintain his clean sheet. 7
JOSHUA KIMMICH: Good battle with Sinclair on the Bayern right, but advanced position was highlighted by getting on the end of Coman’s cross to head home the second. Energetic showing. 8
MATS HUMMELS: Cruised through the game and claimed the third goal with a header after peeling off Boyata. Completely unruffled by the little action that Celtic managed to throw his way. 7

JEROME BOATENG: Played a fair portion of the night in central midfield such was Bayern’s dominance, coming forward at will and adding another body to an area that Bayern were already well in control of. Untroubled defensively as he fielded high punts against Griffiths. 7
DAVID ALABA: Blazed over from a great position in the first half, but combination with Coman was a joy to watch at times down the Bayern left. Showcased wonderful passing range. 8
THIAGO ALCANTARA: Had the ball in the net in the opening minutes only for the goal to be disallowed. Showed his quality throughout with impeccable touch, balance and passing. A class above before being given a break in the last 20 minutes. 8
ARJEN ROBBEN: Showed that he was willing to do defensive shift by helping out Kimmich with Sinclair, and had Tierney on red alert all evening. Should have scored with a tame effort when through on Gordon. 8
SEBASTIEN RUDY: Relentless energy and pressing made life impossible for the Celtic midfield, who couldn’t get their foot on the ball. Sauntered through the match. 8
THOMAS MULLER: Lucky not to be carded for poor challenge on Brown, but did what he does best by gambling on Lewandowski’s header being saved to slam home the first. Not the flashiest of the Bayern megastars, but one of their most effective. 8
KINGSLEY COMAN: Was going past Gamboa as if he wasn’t there in the first half, tying the Celtic full-back in knots and producing quality when it came to his final ball. 9
ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI: Ran off Lustig with ease and was every inch the handful that he was fully expected to be. Had a goal disallowed for offside, and the only surprise was that he didn’t get his name on the scoresheet. 8
SUBSTITUTES
ARTURO VIDAL: Replaced Thiago Alcantara and drifted into great positions. Should have scored with a volley, but hit straight at Gordon. 5

JAMES RODRIGUEZ: Another illustration of the ridiculous strength of the Bayern squad, but didn’t make much of an impact. 3
RAFINHA: Got last 10 minutes in place of Kimmich. 2
CELTIC
CRAIG GORDON: Fantastic save from Lewandowski header, and desperately unlucky to see Muller following in to score. Tried manfully to keep score down as shots rained in on him, and produced fantastic late save from Muller. 8
CRISTIAN GAMBOA: Had hands full with the livewire Coman on second appearance of the season, and played Lewandowski onside for the opening goal. Then beaten by Coman again, allowing him to cross for second. Torrid night for the full-back. 4
MIKAEL LUSTIG: Deployed at centre-half in Simunovic’s absence and never looked comfortable, struggling to deal with the movement of Lewandowski. He won’t be the last, mind you. 5
DEDRYCK BOYATA: Was powerless to prevent the red tide swamping the Celtic goal, and was culpable for Bayern’s third as he allowed Hummels to get away from him too easily. 5

KIERAN TIERNEY: Failed to see Muller following in for Bayern’s first, and looked a little nervous on the ball, often clearing aimlessly. Grew in confidence in the second half and got forward on occasion, going close with a fierce drive that skimmed the post. 5
SCOTT BROWN: Not able to assert his usual influence on the game and was forced to watch the game rather pass him by. Hard to tell if fully fit given the task that he was faced with. 5
OLIVIER NTCHAM: Used the ball well at times, but like the rest of Celtic’s midfielders, was completely overwhelmed by the brilliance of the German engine room. 5
PATRICK ROBERTS: Tried to carry the ball to Bayern when he could, but was forced inside into traffic more often than not. Showed frustration with hack on Thiago that earned a booking and was unable to produce any real moments of danger. 5
STUART ARMSTRONG: Attempted to put a bit of energy in the midfield but struggled to have any impact on the game. Subbed with 25 minutes to go. 5
SCOTT SINCLAIR: Had a run at Kimmich when he could and got past him a couple of times early on, but spent most of the night going the other way as he tried to help Tierney. Had the ball in the net late on, but was denied a consolation by the offside flag. 7
LEIGH GRIFFITHS: Completely isolated and feeding off hopeful punts. Lack of physical presence hindered him against Hummels and Boateng, but in fairness, he was feeding off morsels, rather than scraps. 5
SUBSTITUTES
TOM ROGIC: On for Armstrong and had a shot that Ulreich had to deal with. 4
MOUSSA DEMBELE: Put Griffiths out of his misery with 25 minutes to go but had little impact. 3
JAMES FORREST: Replaced Roberts with a little over 10 minutes to go and had a great run that ended with a shot on target. Direct. 4
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
