Marc Warren started the week by welcoming his second child into the family and ended it with his third-top 10 in his last four events on the European
Tour.
The Glasgow golfer signed off from the circuit’s big money Rolex Series Italian Open with a five-under 66 for a 16-under 268 which left him in a tie for 10th spot behind eventual winner Tyrrell Hatton, who birdied five of his
last seven holes to claim back-to-back titles following his Dunhill Links victory the previous weekend.
Warren’s resurgence, which started with a runners-up finish in the Portugal Masters a month ago, has propelled him up the Tour’s money list and he has now confirmed his place in the circuit’s lucrative Final Series.
Warren, who began his final round yesterday with an eagle and a birdie on his opening two holes, continues to feature at the sharp end of the leaderboard and the 36-year-old is confident he can add to his three European Tour titles.
He said: “The run has been good and I’ve been close to winning. Showing
this kind of week-in, week-out consistency has been part of my game that’s
been missing in recent years. If I keep putting myself in there, I know my game is good enough to win. Hopefully, I’ll get over the line soon. It’s very hard to win. The standard is very high. There’s no let up at these events and you have to get the foot down and keep going. The European Tour is as strong as it’s ever been, in my opinion.”
After a busy spell in recent weeks, Warren is set to take a fortnight off before returning to make a final push in the Race to Dubai.
He added: “It’s an exciting run coming up. Four weeks ago, I was nowhere near these events. This is a huge bonus going into two weeks off. My game, both short game and long game, has really come on and I’m getting the rewards now.”
At the top of the order, Hatton’s rousing late charge led to a 65 and gave him a one shot win over Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand and England’s Ross
Fisher, who was also runner-up to Hatton at the Dunhill.
On the European Challenge Tour, meanwhile, East Lothian’s Grant Forrest posted his best finish on the second-tier circuit with a share of second in the Hainan Open in China.
The former Scottish Amateur champion, who still has a chance of automatic promotion to the main European Tour, closed with a three-under 69 for a
16-under aggregate and finished two shots behind South African winner
Erik Van Rooyen.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
