ROBERTO MANCINI has revealed he would like to be Celtic boss, writes Alex Gordon.
However, the Italian insisted he would only take the job if the Hoops had a team that could take on Europe’s elite on a regular basis.
The former Manchester City gaffer said: “The Scottish fans are the best in the world, I love them so much.
“It would be nice to see Celtic and Rangers in the English Premier League, but I don’t think it will ever happen because it would also be the end of Scottish football.
“If Celtic managed to build a team strong enough to compete regularly in the Champions League, I might decide to manage them one day.
“They have the fans and they have the history. Now they have to strive to compete at the top level in Europe.”
Mancini, 52, was in charge of Inter Milan during their thrilling 3-3 draw with the Hoops at Parkhead in the Europa League knock-out stages in February 2015.
The Serie A outfit scraped through against Ronny Deila’s outfit in the San Siro with a stoppage-time winner following Virgil van Dijk’s first-half red card.
Mancini was axed by Inter weeks before the start of this season and he is now ready to return to the dug-out.
He added: “In the future, I would love to coach the Italian national team.
“To lead your country is the crowning ambition for any coach.
“For the moment, though, I want to continue working with club teams.
“I do not think I will go over to China.
“They called me, but I said no because, for me, the real place for football is Europe.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
