Stuart Hogg: Off after 15 minutes, initially for a head-injury assessment, but did not reappear. 4 out of 10
Tommy Seymour: Switched to full-back when Hogg went off, and saw little of the ball in the first half as England cut loose through the middle. Had a couple of runs in the second, but could do nothing to inspire a fightback. 5
Huw Jones: Scored two tries to confirm his attacking prowess, but he was made to look pedestrian at times by Joseph. 6
Alex Dunbar: Fell off Jonathan Joseph for England’s first score and looked out of sorts as he and Jones came under heavy pressure. 5
Tim Visser: Like Seymour, the left-winger had very little possession in the first half as England dominated play and pressed through the middle. 5
Finn Russell: Missed touch and had a drop-goal attempt charged down in an inauspicious beginning, but his decision to kick a penalty to touch paid off with Scotland’s first score. One of his toughest games for Scotland. 5
Ali Price: had little chance to shine at scrum-half before moving to the wing in the reshuffle enforced by injuries to Hogg and Bennett. 5
Gordon Reid: Fought well in the scrum and grabbed Scotland’s first points with a powerful short-yardage burst. 6
Fraser Brown: Sinbinned in the second minute for a late and dangerous tackle on Elliot Daly that curtailed the winger’s afternoon, he was substituted a few minutes into the second half. 4
Zander Fagerson: Performed solidly at the set piece, the part of the game in which Scotland came closest to parity. 6
Richie Gray: Significantly less impressive than he has been this season, albeit against opponents on top of their game. 5
Jonny Gray: Also had a far quieter game by his high standards as England’s pack quickly became dominant. 5
John Barclay: Scrambled well on the deck in what was a severe test of his leadership. 6
Hamish Watson: Displayed his characteristic energetic menace with a few good runs. 6
Ryan Wilson: Injured in an early collision but competed in determined fashion until a head knock forced him off. 5
Substitutes:
Mark Bennett: temporary replacement for Hogg in the first half but was only on for a couple of minutes before going off injured.
Henry Pyrgos: on at scrum-half midway through the first half when Bennett was injured.
Allan Dell: On for Reid after 44 minutes
Ross Ford: The hooker came on at the same time as Dell with the match long gone.
Simon Berghan: came on for final quarter in place of Fagerson.
Cornell du Preez: came on for Wilson to win his first cap.
Tim Swinson: Took over from Jonny Gray for the last five minutes.
Duncan Weir: HIA replacement for Seymour early in the second half
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
