BRAEHEAD CLAN finally managed to stop the rot with a battling 4-2 victory over the Nottingham Panthers and secure their place in the Elite League play-offs.

Ryan Finnerty’s team were on a torrid run going into Sunday night’s match at the Braehead Arena, having lost each of their last five games.

That was including Saturday's disappointing 5-2 defeat to the Belfast Giants in front of a sold-out home crowd.

However, a fine performance on the banks of the Clyde the following evening ensured that the two important points would be staying in Glasgow.

David Clarke had fired the visitors into a first-period lead that the Panthers would hold on to until the break.

The second was much more like it from Clan as Scott Pitt and Nathan McIver both found the back of the net.

Five minutes into the third period former Braehead man Robert Farmer levelled the game with 15 minutes to play, but Finnerty’s men were not ready to give up just yet.

With 11 minutes and 43 seconds on the clock Pitt struck once more to give the hosts the upper hand for the second time in the contest before the former Las Vegas Wranglers forward struck again late on into an empty net.

Prior to Clan’s recent dip, which coincided with a debilitating host of injury setbacks, the Gardiner conference outfit were still well in the hunt to finish top of the standings come the final day.

However, Braehead have since refocused their attentions and are now guaranteed to be one of the eight teams heading into the play-off quarter finals after the regular season is up.

They currently sit just one point behind Nottingham in fourth and two behind Belfast in third, with the top four teams going up against the bottom four in reverse order.
