Iain Vigurs admits that Inverness supporters have yet to see the best of him since his return to the club in August.
Vigurs signed up for a second spell at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium after an injury-hit final season with today’s opponents Motherwell, and he admits that he will need to rebuild his shattered confidence before he can really show the Inverness faithful what he is capable of.
He said: “Even though I’m back playing I still feel a little bit off the pace. I’m not happy with my game personally, and I think with being out so long my confidence has taken a little bit of a hit.
“I just need to find that again. It’s all about re-establishing your game. Confidence is a big thing for me in terms of my football, getting that back is the main thing for me. I think I’m still playing within myself at the moment because when you’re not as confident as you usually are, you do things that are a little bit more basic.
“When the confidence starts to come I’ll probably start to express myself a little bit more. That’s more my game, playing on the edge a little bit and providing assists, but at the moment it’s more about just trying to get the ball from A to B!”
Vigurs is looking forward to playing at Fir Park again, and despite enduring an exasperating final few months with Motherwell, he isn’t returning to Lanarkshire with a point to prove.
“I was frustrated not to have the chance to show Ian Baraclough what I was all about, but I knew myself with not playing that I wouldn’t have a leg to stand on when it came to negotiating a new contract,” he admitted.
“It wasn’t the best way to leave Motherwell, it was very frustrating and it’s been a rough year so far, but hopefully that’s behind me now.
“I’ve no regrets about my time at Motherwell, I really enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to getting down and seeing the boys that I played with. I really enjoyed every minute of being there, it’s such a great family club.
“The first season was brilliant. Pipping Aberdeen to second spot in the last game of the season is right up there with the highlights of my career.
“I’m from Stonehaven, so I’ve got a few mates that are Aberdeen fans and my best man is actually a mad Aberdeen fan, and he wasn’t speaking to me for a while after that!
“I wish Motherwell all the best and I think that Mark McGhee will do a good job there, and I hope they can get back to doing what they were before I went to the club and in my first season there – finishing second or third and playing in Europe.
“They deserve that and the fans deserve that.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
