WES FLETCHER, the Motherwell striker, is looking forward to making up for lost time now he is on the road back to full fitness.

The man signed in the summer after having left York City got his career at Fir Park off to a flying start with a debut winner away to Inverness Caledonian Thistle on the opening day of the campaign. Since then, though, things have not gone to plan for the 24-year-old. Only one more game followed before injury took hold in the form of an ankle problem. As it would transpire, his next match in claret and amber would come in Mark McGhee’s first in charge against Celtic earlier this month, a game Fletcher has conceded perhaps came a little too early for him.

But having built on his fitness over two weeks of non-stop training, as well as an impressive performance away to Aberdeen last weekend, Fletcher is keen to get on the goal trail once more.

"It's frustrating when you get injured just after signing for a new club,” said the forward, who will travel to Kilmarnock today on Ladbrokes Premiership duty. “I'd a few last year too but I want to come back stronger and start scoring again.

"I was keen to get back quick because there are a lot of strikers and I want to start scoring. There is more to come from me. I didn't feel that sharp against Celtic and I tired towards the end. Against Aberdeen, I felt a lot better after a good hard week of training.”

As previously mentioned, McGhee has not gone easy on his new group of players as he tries to whip them into shape. The Fir Park squad have not had a midweek day off since the former Aberdeen man came in, but Fletcher is prepared to look at the bigger picture.

"That's been a change under the new manager but we just have to get the heads down and work,” he said. "You will always get people moaning! But we are just getting on with it and working hard.

"I understand why the manager wants us in every day. He has new ideas and a way he wants to play, so we need to work on that. You saw against Aberdeen that it is working with the way we defended and attacked them. Hopefully if we win a game we will get a day off.”
