Maria Lyle made it a silver double at the IPC World Championships in Doha last night but the Scots sprinter has now set her sights on Paralympic gold.
The 15-year-old from Dunbar lowered her European record to 13.92 seconds in the T35 100 metres final but, in a repeat of the 200m finale, had to play second fiddle to Australia’s Isis Holt who broke the world mark with a run of 13.63.
It sets up an enticing rivalry between the teenagers ahead of Brazil next year and Lyle, who has cerebral palsy, believes her times will come down even further if she can improve her starts.
“That is something I’ll have to work on with my coach,” said Lyle, who watched Holt beat her championship record in the semi-finals. “We’ll have to focus on a lot of technical things. I’m going to have a hard winter training session to make sure I’m in even better shape ahead of Rio next year.
“I’m happy with the time considering I had a bad start. I tripped slightly in my first few strides unfortunately. I would have liked to have won the gold medal but it wasn’t to be, I tried my best. I now have to focus on the relay on Saturday, we have a really strong team and everyone is running well so it should be exciting.”
Elsewhere Sophie Hahn just missed out on a second title when she was beaten into second in the T38 200m final.
