Martin Canning says that Hamilton red-card villain Darian MacKinnon let the club down with his dismissal against Dundee.

MacKinnon was sent off for a high challenge on Thomas Konrad, but despite their numerical disadvantage, his side fought back to claim a point.

Manager Canning was disappointed that MacKinnon put his teammates in such a position, but he has backed the fiery midfielder to come back even stronger.

“Darian knew he was in the wrong, he’s had a rush of blood,” he said.

“He’s went to try and win the ball, but he ends up catching the boy. It’s one of those things, but we’ve taken care of it internally and now he’ll have to get his head down, work hard and try to force his way back into the team.

“We’re frustrated that we’ll be missing him for a few games and Darian knows that he’s let himself down by doing that. We know that can be in his nature, but it’s up to him to curb that, he’s experienced enough now to know better and I was disappointed in him for doing that on Saturday.

“There was no question it was a red card, he’s held hands up and apologised to the boys.”

Hamilton travel to Firhill on Saturday without MacKinnon to take on a rejuvenated Partick Thistle side.

There was further good news for Thistle fans on the back of their recent good run, as promising striking talent Kevin Nisbet outlined his determination to do whatever it takes to make it in Alan Archibald’s first-team.

He said: “I am determined to prove that I can make it at the highest level. I’ll be patient, work hard and hopefully I’ll get my reward of a chance again in the first-team at some stage.

“I think I can bring goals to the team if I get the chance. When I had those tastes of playing in the first-team I didn’t feel out of place, and a few of the boys have told me that I didn’t look out of place either, so I think I’m ready to make a contribution.

“There’s a massive difference between the first team and the under-20s. It’s much faster, you’re playing for real competitive points and you have the fans behind you. There’s more pressure obviously but that’s something you can thrive off of.

“I’m taking it step-by-step. At the moment I just take things game-by-game. Hopefully I’ll continue to do well for the under-20s and get another chance to impress the manager soon.”
