David Amoo has warned his Partick Thistle teammates that they must build on their win over Dundee United.
Amoo is no stranger to a relegation battle, having been involved in one as recently as last season with his previous club Carlisle, and he fears that his new side may be dragged into another one if they let the momentum of their first victory of the campaign slip away.
“We’ve won one game – it’s not as though we can just relax now and think ‘we’re out of it’,” he said.
“We’re still in the relegation zone and we’ve got some really hard games coming up.
“So we need points for sure. St Johnstone is going to be a really tough game, they’ve beat some good teams lately.
“When you’re down there it is tough, mentally it’s tough and losing games is very difficult. So we need to keep the momentum of winning going and hopefully we can do that this weekend.
“You don’t want to have a negative attitude. I’d just come in and it was all new to me – the whole league was new to me.
“So there was a lot to deal with – not winning, moving up here and stuff like that. It was difficult but hopefully we can start afresh now, having got our first win.
“The relegation zone is certainly not an enjoyable place to be and last season it was very difficult. I don’t want to be in one of those battles again, so fingers crossed we get some wins.
“It was a bit of a good thing and a bad thing, the international break. It let us relax a bit more and things were definitely a bit happier.
“But having a game last weekend would definitely have been really good because training was good, there was a buzz and it would have been great to be able to keep the momentum going.
“You don’t notice when you are losing games but when you are winning you notice there’s a bit of a difference – everyone seems a bit happier and everyone is looking forward to the next game.
“It was a great relief for the whole team just to get off the mark with that first win, for sure.
“Now we’ve got a game this weekend and hopefully we can carry on from where we left off.
“We kept a clean sheet as well, so that was really good for all the lads.
“I feel really good, really confident and I’m just looking forward to the St Johnstone game now.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
