LEE WALLACE reckons in-form forward Martyn Waghorn has been just as crucial to Rangers’ defensive record as he has their superb scoring run.
The 25-year-old took his tally for the campaign to 14 goals in just 13 games with a hat-trick against Morton on Sunday.
Victory at Cappielow moved Mark Warburton’s side nine points clear in the Championship title race as they bounced back from defeat to St Johnstone with an impressive performance against the Ton.
The Light Blues have conceded just four times in their eight second tier outings so far this term as they have stormed out of the blocks in the opening weeks of the campaign.
And skipper Wallace is delighted to see Waghorn making his mark at both ends of the park as attentions turn to the visit of Falkirk this weekend.
“It was important that Waggy played football and he is still a young lad with bags of potential and he’s settled in with the rest of the lads and done ever so well,” he told RangersTV.
“Credit to him he has chipped in with the goals but it is his all-round game that has been the most pleasing thing for the team.
“What he brings to the team – his work rate, his touch, his technique and his technical ability is great, you see that in training every day and he has an obvious eye for goal.
“He is right up there in the scoring charts but his main focus is what he can bring to the team and his work rate off the ball, which again starts with him.
“The way we play is that we defend from the front and attack from the back and he is a main part of that.
“He is a difficult opponent to come up against in training, whether it’s in small sided games or the possession based stuff we do.
“Out of possession he is a main part of our team, how he starts the press and the defensive side of our work as well.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
