SCOTS Daniel Purvis and Frank Baines have been included on a seven-strong British men’s team nominative list ahead of the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow next month.
The list of names submitted to the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) includes world silver all-around medallist Max Whitlock and reigning European pommel horse champion Louis Smith alongside Sam Oldham and Kristian Thomas.
All four plus Purvis were part of the Team GB quintet that took bronze at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Former European junior all-around champion Baines was part of the Team Scotland silver medal-winning team at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Five-time European junior champion Nile Wilson, who won high bar gold at Glasgow 2014, is also named.
The final team, however, is by no means set in stone. The nominative list submitted by British Gymnastics at this stage is merely for administrative purposes to adhere to FIG deadlines ahead of the championships which take place at the SSE Hydro from October 23 until November 1.
The London Open this weekend will serve as the first trials for the British men with two key internationals against Spain and France in the coming weeks. The final team is due to be announced on October 12.
Others looking to gain selection include Scotland’s Daniel Keatings, a two-time European gold medallist and Commonwealth Games champion on pommel horse, as well as fellow Great Britain squad members Courtney Tulloch, Dominick Cunningham and Brinn Bevan.
The seven women named for Great Britain on the nominative list are sisters Ellie and Becky Downie, Claudia Fragapane, Ruby Harrold, Kelly Simm, Amy Tinkler and Charlie Fellows.
Fragapane made history at the SSE Hydro last summer when after becoming the first Englishwoman in 84 years to win four gold medals at a single Commonwealth Games.
Ellie Downie, meanwhile, became the first female gymnast to win an individual all-around medal for Great Britain at the European Championships with a bronze in April.
The final selection for the women’s team will also be announced on October 12.
Elsewhere, defending world all-around champion Simone Biles is named for USA alongside Olympic gold medallist Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman, MyKayla Skinner, Maggie Nichols, Brenna Dowell and Madison Kocian.
Russia’s Aliya Mustafina, who announced last week that she would not compete in Glasgow before changing her mind a few days later, has been included as has her compatriot Viktoria Komova. The pair were Olympic bronze and silver all-around medallists respectively at London 2012.
Japanese gymnastics star Kohei Uchimura, a five-time world all-around champion who will be aiming for his sixth consecutive title next month, is also on the nominative list.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
