FORMER Rangers boss Alex McLeish is being linked to the vacant Hapoel Tel Aviv job as the underperforming Israeli side look to turn around their fortunes.

Hapoel, 13-time national champions, finished in the bottom half of the table last year and sacked coach Cesar Mendiodo after only two league games this season. They picked up their first win of the season on Saturday after beating Hapoel Haifa 1-0 away from home.

Club legend Walid Badir is currently the caretaker manager but it is believed new owner Amir Gross Kabiri wants a foreign coach at Bloomfield Stadium to help challenge current champions and Hapoel’s rivals Maccabi Tel Aviv - whose CEO is McLeish’s former Rangers colleague Martin Bain.

However, Sport5 are reporting that while McLeish is high-up on the shortlist he will want to bring in his own backroom staff which could prove to be a financial stumbling block.

McLeish has proved his willingness to work abroad after a stint in Belgium with Genk last season, following an unsuccessful end to time his time in England with Nottingham Forest.
