SIR Peter Heatly, the three times Empire Games gold-medal diver, has died at the age of 91.

He dominated diving in Scotland for more than a decade, winning the treble – both platform titles and the springboard – for a record 12 successive years.

He won five medals during three consecutive Empire Games, captaining the Scotland team in 1958 and finished fifth in the platform at the 1948 Olympics in London.

Having been an iconic sportsman, with gold in three successive editions of what came to be known as the Commonwealth Games, he became a high flying administrator. He filled every role in the Scottish team from manager to chef de mission, and attended every Games from 1950 to Glasgow 2014. He was a key figure on the organising committee of the 1970 Games in Edinburgh, served as chair of Commonwealth Games Scotland and chaired the Commonwealth Games Federation from 1982 to 1990, which covered the return of the Games to Edinburgh, in 1986.

Awarded a CBE in 1971 and knighted in 1990, he was also chairman of the Scottish Sports Council (now sportscotland), from 1975 to 1987.

When his grandson, James, returned with gold, silver, and bronze medals from the European Games in Baku this year, it was the first international title by a Scottish diver since Sir Peter had won the 10-metre highboard in Cardiff, in 1958.
