When a goalkeeper leaves a club in search of regular game-time because he has been deposed by an incoming keeper, it would not be seen as an obvious step to then join a club where there are two senior shot-stoppers already in place.

New Motherwell signing Craig Samson is sure though that he can force his way into Ian Baraclough’s starting line-up despite the presence of Dan Twardzik and current number one Connor Ripley already at the club.

He said: "I am not here to kick my heels at training.

"I know there are three goalkeepers here and there is a number one in the team at the moment.

"It is down to myself and Dan Twardzik to push him as hard as we possibly can to get in the team.

"As a goalkeeper you know you have to be patient and work hard to force your way into the side.

"But I am not the type to sit there and not play and just take the money.

"I knew the situation when I left Kilmarnock that most of the squads would have their goalkeepers in place, but I was always confident that I would get a club.

"The manager does not bring anybody to the club if he does not rate them.

"I don't think that is any different if you are a goalkeeper or an outfield player. There is healthy competition for places and that can only be a good thing.

"Whoever is holding the jersey has to be playing well and hopefully that will push us on in the league.

"I had a conversation with the manager at Kilmarnock when Jamie (MacDonald) signed and I knew he was going to play.

"I didn't think that I would get any game time with Jamie being there.

"So it was bet for all parties if I left the club.

"There are no hard feelings towards Gary Locke and Kilmarnock and in Jamie has been their best player this season.

"Sometimes your time is up at a place and it is time to move on.

"I had a great time at Rugby Park and I live in Kilmarnock and I have a lot of friends at the club.

"Leaving was the best thing for my career.”
