AYR United nudged early pacesetters Dunfermline Athletic off the top of the table with a 2-0 win at East End Park.

Alan Forrest put Ayr in front midway through the first half when he raced clear to beat Sean Murdoch.

Dunfermline’s goal touch eluded them for once and, when Jordan Preston took advantage of some slack defending to score Ayr’s second goal after half time, there was no way back.

Forfar Athletic took over at the top on goal difference after defeating winless Brechin City 2-0 at Glebe Park. Derek Young opened the scoring on the stroke of half time and when Omar Kader scored the second three minutes, into the second half, it was clear Brechin, who have managed only four goals in the league this season, did not have the firepower to respond.

Airdrieonians maintained their challenge with a 3-1 win at local rivals Albion Rovers. Taylor Morgan and an own goal by Mick Dunlop gave them a two-goal advantage in the first 20 minutes but Darren Young pulled a goal back on the stroke of half time. David Cox completed matters in the second half.

Cowdenbeath, in spite of having Mo Yaqub sent off, came from behind twice to force a 2-2 draw with Peterhead at Central Park.

Rory McAllister gave the visitors an early lead from the penalty spot – his 11th goal of the campaign – but Cowdenbeath equalised through Gordon Smith’s first goal for the club.

Shane Sutherland put Peterhead in front again after 62 minutes but, down to 10 men, Greig Spence salvaged a point for the hosts.

Allan Smith scored the only goal as Stenhousemuir beat Stranraer 1-0.
