NEW Partick Thistle captain Abdul Osman believes the Firhill men should be targeting the top six rather than simply retaining their Premiership status as they open up their campaign at Hamilton.
It is 25 seasons since the Maryhill side finished sixth in a top-flight campaign and their best ever finish is fifth but Osman has belief.
The Ghanaian midfielder said: “I am looking for the top six. Last season we lost a few games we shouldn’t have and hopefully we can avoid that this year.
“Our home form is vital and it’s important we get the fans behind us in every game. I think at home our pitch suits us as we are a passing side.
“We had a tough spell at home last year and that was frustrating at times. I always think the majority of your points should come at home and then the away games are about adding extra points.
“I think the teams, out with Celtic, are all about the same level. It is just what happens on the day. We are ready for Saturday and it’s a game that we can win. It’s not Celtic we are playing, so we should be going there looking to get the victory.”
Osman is enjoying life in Scottish football again after being part of the ill-fated Gretna squad in the 2007-08 season having become a favourite of the supporters for his committed style.
He said: “The club has really grown on me in my time here and my feelings get stronger and stronger.
“The support I have had from the manager, the players and fans is brilliant.
“It is always nice to hear from the fans through social media and I get a lot of support from them – so I must be doing something right. I want to kick on this season and repay them for that.
“It feels good to be named captain and it is a real privilege for me as this is only my second season here. When you are captain you feel that extra responsibility to help the boys. I am one of the more experienced players who tries to lead by example.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
