Forfar Athletic stumbled to a 1-0 defeat at Peterhead as they lost the leadership of League One with just two matches remaining.
It was clear from the outset at Balmoor that Forfar would not get it all their own way and goalkeeper Robert Douglas had to earn his corn.
He handled most of what came his way but had little chance when Jamie Redman headed the only goal of the game from a corner shortly before half-time.
Forfar hit back and Graeme Smith had to play his part for the home side, most notably reacting well to keep out a late Stephen Husband shot.
Stranraer took full advantage of the slip to go top with a 3-2 win over Stenhousemuir at Stair Park.
Willie Gibson eased them into the match with a brilliant solo goal after just 13 minutes and Sean Winter gave them some breathing space when he found the roof of the net five minutes from the break.
It looked to be all over when Craig Pettigrew scored his first goal for the club with a long-range effort but Stenhousemuir did not lie down.
Martin Grehan pulled a goal back and then Ciaran Summers made it an uncomfortable final couple of minutes for the home side by scoring a second goal for Stenhousemuir.
Morton moved second on goal difference and just a point behind Stranraer with a 2-0 win over relegated Stirling Albion 2-0 at Forthbank.
The home side caused them some anxious moments early in the game, Derek Gaston saving well from Chris Paton and then, late in the half, denying Gordon Smith from distance.
But Morton took control after the break and, from the moment they took the lead, there was little doubt about the outcome.
Jamie McCluskey made the breakthrough when he volleyed home from close range in a crowded penalty area eight minutes into the second half and Declan McManus added the clinching goal shortly afterwards.
Brechin City comfortably took care of ten-man Dunfermline Athletic 3-0 to home in on a play-off spot.
Dunfermline's Ross Millen was sent off after only 13 minutes following an off-the-ball incident and Brechin took advantage.
Alan Trouten scored twice and Andy Jackson netted the third goal midway through the second half.
Airdrieonians kept their slim hopes alive with a 2-0 win over Ayr United.
Bob McHugh scored after 79 minutes and added his second seven minutes later to ensure victory.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
