People from communities across Scotland have started rehearsals for performing at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

Around 2,000 cast members will take part in the spectacle to mark the beginning of Glasgow 2014.

They will perform in front of around 40,000 people at Celtic Park on July 23.

Rehearsals have been taking place at locations across the city, with the cast being taught the choreographed routines.

Artistic director David Zolkwer said: "Our goal has always been to have the people of Glasgow and Scotland take centre-stage; for them to speak (and sing and dance) for themselves.

"So, on the night our audience will witness thousands of real people doing extraordinary things - and in the process I know our volunteer cast performers will do themselves, the city and Scotland proud."

Cast member Oliver Edby said: "I am having such a good time being part of the ceremonies cast. I'm really glad I applied and thrilled to have been chosen to be part of it."

Organisers said Celtic Park will feature Europe's largest LED screen and a specially created stage floor which covers the entire pitch.

David Grevemberg, Glasgow 2014 chief executive, said: "The men and women who have come together to be part of the opening ceremony cast are devoting huge amounts of time and effort in what is the adventure of a lifetime.

"They are part of something truly historic, which will showcase Glasgow and Scotland as generous hosts with a passion for life."
