As thousands of Scotland fans plotted out their Euro2024 adventures there would have been much uncertainty about who might make the final squad, will they be able to get match tickets and will we finally escape the group stages.

One thing that won’t have been much of a conundrum though was how to criss-cross the host country. The majority of fans look set to make the most of Germany’s extensive rail network which is famously reliable and affordable. The Tartan Army have been given an array of ticket options including the €29 Deutschland ticket (which gives unlimited travel all over Germany on all means of local public transport - local trains, buses, trams and subways).

But what will weary fans return home to, apart from the obvious victory party when Scotland win the competition?

ASLEF is proud that the pilot removal of peak time fares gained steam after it was initially proposed in our "Vision for Scotland’s Railways" report. We know this has the potential to transform rail travel across Scotland, making it more accessible and affordable for everyone.

If we are to create a sustainable and equitable transportation system, and shift people from road to rail, we need affordable fares. Permanently removing the inflated prices of peak time fares will make rail travel an appealing option for commuters and leisure travellers alike. This change will not just be a victory for the travelling public; it would be a significant step towards reducing our reliance on cars, easing congestion on our roads, and cutting down harmful emissions.

Switching from road to rail is an environmental imperative. At a time when the Scottish Government has unfortunately derailed its climate change targets, introducing more eco-friendly policies is essential. Making rail travel more affordable is a straightforward, effective way to encourage clean, green commuting.

Hiking fares will do nothing to encourage more people to take the train; in fact, it risks pushing them back into their cars. This would reverse the progress made in reducing road traffic and undermine efforts to tackle climate change. We need policies that make public transport a viable and attractive option for all. We need bold action not a cowardly retreat.

The recent pilot programme to eliminate peak time fares is popular with passengers who notice the impact in their pockets. But the initiative is not just about cost; it's about creating a more inclusive and efficient transport system that works for everyone.

The Scottish Government must keep rail travel affordable and accessible. By permanently removing peak time fares, we can ensure that trains remain a cornerstone of our public transport system, benefiting individuals, communities, and the environment. This will put people and the planet first, steering away from outdated policies that favour road travel and towards a future where rail is the preferred choice.

The Germans realise investing in rail travel is worth every penny. Scotland must follow that lead. The Scottish Government should get on board with a permanent removal of peak rails fares, and hopefully, it won’t just be an open-top bus which is used for celebrations this summer and Scots can celebrate all year round with cheaper rail travel.
