Our mission to power a better future extends far beyond the energy we supply. ScottishPower is always looking for ways to drive positive change across the UK, creating lasting benefits for individuals, communities, and the environment; creating real social impact.
Our power is in our people. Last year over 1,700 of us participated in our employee volunteering programme, collectively contributing over 13,300 working hours. Our network of charities we engage with has grown thanks to staff identifying and highlighting new partners they have personal links with.
Young people are the architects of tomorrow’s world, and it’s our responsibility to provide them with the tools and opportunities they need to succeed, which is why we’re in partnership with STEM education programmes across the UK to inspire and educate the next generation.
By engaging students in hands-on learning experiences and providing access to industry professionals, we aim to spark an interest in STEM subjects to nurture the innovators and problem-solvers of the future.
We’re committed to supporting young people across the UK as they take their first steps into the world of work. We’ve expanded our apprenticeship and graduate programmes, offering young people pathways into the energy sector. This isn’t just about learning the ropes; it’s about bringing fresh perspectives and new ideas into our organisation.
Attracting diverse talent while developing an inclusive and supportive workplace is critical to our success. Our Returner Programme is designed to support people who’ve taken a career break and are looking to re-enter the workforce. It recognises the valuable skills and experiences they bring and provides them with opportunities to reintegrate into the workplace, update their skills, and rebuild their careers.
Our award-winning Breaking Barriers programme, run in partnership with Strathclyde University and ENABLE, creates opportunities for young people with barriers to education and employment and aims to raise aspirations and provide equal opportunities to access university.
We’re equally proud of our Engineering Pre-Apprenticeship programme. Since it started, 30% of participants have progressed into an apprenticeship with ScottishPower. 85% of those remain with the company today. This programme isn’t just about building careers; it’s about building futures.
As we look to the future, one of the pillars of our social commitment remains the ScottishPower Foundation. As Executive Officer and Trustee of the Foundation, I’m so proud of the wide range of charitable projects supported across the UK - from community development and environmental initiatives to arts and culture programmes.
We’re celebrating the 10th annual ScottishPower Foundation Awards in November - an opportunity to reflect on the tremendous impact the Foundation has had over the past decade.
This year’s ceremony is set to be particularly special as we mark this significant milestone. It’s not just about recognising the exceptional work of our award recipients; it’s also about reaffirming our commitment to continuing this important work in the years to come.
