I THINK dogs, cats, horses and ferrets need passports to travel abroad – as do people of course. Fish don't; not yet anyway. However, no one ever defines a horse, for example, by reference to its passport. I therefore fail to see why human beings, allegedly of superior intelligence, need passports, never mind blue ones, to define their identities and find out who they truly are (" French will make blue UK passports", The Herald, March 23. Do we feel so passionate about our driving licences I wonder?

As there is such a strong and irresistible desire now to go as far back in time as is possible, will Brexiters seek to change "Dieu et mon droit" on the Coat of Arms adopted as the Royal motto of England by King Henry V to "My passport and my right", with the appropriate fish, or other suitable animal, adorning it?
