I WAS surprised to read in that the Scottish "surcharge" was still being levied ("We must end the scandal of delivery surcharges", Agenda, The Herald, December 4). Many years ago, when I'd ordered goods from an English company, I was informed that, due to my postcode, ML11, I'd have to pay a surcharge.

When I asked if Berwick upon Tweed paid that charge I was told of course not". To cut a long conversation short the surcharge was waived because where I live, Douglas in South Lanarkshire, was approximately 18 miles south of Berwick. A very large lump of Scotland lies to the south of that northern bastion of England, Berwick upon Tweed.

It will probably surprise the residents of Hamilton, Wishaw, East Kilbride, Motherwell and Beith that a lot of them live to the south of the northernmost border with England. Indeed, much of Islay and the Mull of Kintyre lie to the south of Berwick upon Tweed. All of Arran, too. Might I suggest we should all open up a map of the UK and find out where they live relative to our neighbour, England. Those who have been surcharged should broadcast the fact.
