I WAS delighted to read of the success of Glasgow schools (“A decade of success as Glasgow schools ditch the poverty excuse”, The Herald, November 27, and Letters, November 28).

I was also pleased to read that all staff in schools had been acknowledged for contributing to this success. However, there was no mention of the incredible contribution made by parents, particularly in schools who have a high proportion of children whose first language is not English and in areas of deprivation. My own children attended schools in Govanhill (St Bride’s Primary and Holyrood Secondary) where there are many different cultures and different languages. In both of the schools that my children attended there were, and still are, active parent councils that support the work of the schools. The parent councils also support parents who are new to the schools and from a different country and culture as well as parents of children with additional support needs.

The successes of our schools would not have been possible without parents buying into the policies and providing their support. My three sons received a great education at their schools which was made possible by teachers, support staff and, significantly, by other parents who supported the schools they attended.
