WE learn that Hope Street is the most polluted road in the UK and that Glasgow has a higher concentration of dangerous sooty particles than London, Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham ("Glasgow one of the most polluted cities in the UK, says watchdog", The Herald, October 31). This is clearly a matter of great concern, particularly to those who walk its streets and urgent action is required.

In the absence of such action by the authorities, the old Glasgow motto may have to be re-visited at some stage:

"The fish that never swam,

the tree that never grew,

the bell that never rang, and

the air that never enlivened."

Perhaps, we will all be expected to get the masks out.
