It could be a question for television’s Have I Got News for You: What connects Dundee with La Rioja, Madagascar and an ancient stone fortress deep in the Amazon rainforest in Peru?
Not fine wine, obviously, nor cutesy animated films. And in only one of these places do the residents routinely pronounce the word “pie” as “peh”.
The answer is that all four feature in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ)’s list of “hot” destinations to travel to next year. The digest is aimed at “adventurous sophisticates” – from “curious foodies” to “deep-pocketed beach bums”. Dundee’s inclusion is at least in part a nod to the planned opening in 2018 of the city’s new V&A Museum of Design, part of a £1.5billion waterfront regeneration.
But forget the cliches about pehs, not to mention jute, jam and journalism. The WSJ also notes a wider transformation of the city’s profile, citing the Reading Rooms underground club as the epitome of Dundee’s new cool.
VisitScotland is cock-a-hoop at this message going out to the WSJ’s 4.1 million readers, and rightly so. No doubt Dundee’s many fine restaurants would also welcome the paper’s deep-pocketed, curious foodies.
The only caveat is that American would-be visitors might need to be warned against taking the “hot” element of “hot destination” too literally; especially those beach bums.
