WELL done John Marshall for extolling the virtues and health benefits, the vitamins, minerals and fibre of the modest and unpretentious spud when commenting on Steven Camley’s cartoon of October 25. (Letters, October 26 ).

Praise be also for the potato’s versatility, boiled, mashed, fried or as the pinnacle of culinary excellence as the ubiquitous chip, also known in these airts as a “Glasgow salad”.

At home or abroad, we aficionados enjoy our chips with a clear conscience in the knowledge that it’s very hard to get food poisoning from them.
