HAVING discovered the financial benefit of switching energy suppliers twice now in two years, I find accepting the offer of a smart meter loses its attraction because energy companies use different models of meters. This means opting for a change of supplier can lose the functionality of the installed meter if it can't communicate with the new supplier's system and reverting to monthly online meter readings at best.

I find it surprising that a universal meter hasn't been produced. Why not?
