Marilyn Murray describes the Nuka system in Alaska as "no more than primitive healthcare as an adjunct to the deficient privatised American system" (Alaskan 'solution' wouldn't solve health problem, Letters, April 26). Southcentral Foundation, Alaska, established the Nuka system 20 years ago and it has gone from strength to strength, winning the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 2011, and acclaimed by such luminaries as Professor Don Berwick and the King's Fund in London. It functions similarly to our NHS on behalf of a native Alaskan population of 65,000, providing comprehensive health care. Same-day access to the GP of your choice, extended consultation times, nurse or behavioural health consultant, and a one-stop shop system for all primary care tests, may appear primitive to Marilyn Murray but others would reach a different conclusion.
